Pushing Your Limits

Utilising the power of human performance in everyday life

I’ve always been fascinated by human performance and what the human body can achieve. Take Usain Bolt, for example, who has redefined what the optimal sprinting physique is. Or Eliud Kipchoge, who broke the elusive 2-hour marathon barrier, averaging an astonishing pace of 21.2 kph - a speed that most treadmills don’t even reach. More recently, Elena Svitolina reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon just 9 months after giving birth. To bounce back from such a traumatic physical event so quickly is incredible. And then there’s the Ironman, considered by many to be one of the world’s most challenging single-day endurance races. The distances involved—a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon—are mind-boggling.

I’ve often wondered what drives someone to take on this immense challenge. And then I met one of my clients, Stuart, who sought my services after suffering from a niggling hamstring and decreasing flexibility following a fractured vertebrae last year. After discussing his goals and exercise history, I almost had to do a double take when he said that in the past 22 years, he has completed 30 Ironman events, including earning a start at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

Stuart's recently published book, 'The Road to Kona: A Drive Half Done,' provides a glimpse into his adventures, triumphs, and mistakes throughout his Ironman journey. In it, he reflects on the difficult question posed by his teenage son, "Why Dad? Why?" Through humor, poignancy, and personal anecdotes, Stuart attempts to answer this question, shedding light on the determination and spirit required to endure the physical and mental challenges associated with such a daunting task, time after time.

While not all of us may feel the need to push ourselves to the extremes of an Ironman, Stuart's story serves as a reminder of the human capacity for pushing boundaries and embracing challenges. It speaks to the idea that we all have potential within us, waiting to be discovered and harnessed in various aspects of health and fitness.

So, I’ve shared Stuart's book for a couple of reasons. First, because it’s a brilliant read, and I believe it will interest anyone who swims, cycles, runs, has lots of energy, or simply enjoys armchair adventures. And second, because I hope that it can inspire us to push ourselves, set goals, and persevere through adversity.

While our pursuits may differ, the underlying mindset that pushes us to achieve these goals may be similar. So why not let us embrace the challenge, unlock our potential, and continue to defy expectations in our own unique ways?
